The revamp of a one bed flat in Whitechapel, London into a home and pop up event.
It started when the clearing out of old belongings and the stripping of wallpaper exposed an absorbing history.
I decided to enlist artist and friend Julia Miranda to help create an installation to ILLUMINATE AND RE-IMAGINE the flat’s rich past.
This unique collaboration uses layers of PRESERVED wallpaper, linoleum, textiles and discarded belongings to write a new narrative of lives and dreams long past - like an “Alice in Whitechapel”.
The main FOCUS of the space is an 8cm frieze, an alternative timeline, cutting horizontally through the flat. It creates a means of framing and embedding the work.
“The reordering of these bare slices of time allows the emergence of a new narrative,” says Miranda. “Some elements remain in the background and fade into obscurity while others are given prominence, exploding into a new exuberance.”
